When innovative and sustainable production processes meet lovingly preserved native grape varieties, the result is unique.
An artisanal approach, continuous experimentation and a focus on quality have made Masciarelli one of the most unique companies on the Italian scene, capable of interpreting the rich biodiversity of the Abruzzo region to offer small, quality productions with a strong individual character and closely linked to the terroir of origin. With 60 plots of vineyard between the sea and the mountains in the four Abruzzo provinces, Masciarelli is the first private company in Abruzzo in terms of vineyard area. Its production stands at 2 million bottles per year, split into 7 product lines and 22 labels. Over the past ten years, Masciarelli has also intensively focused on hospitality, attracting wine lovers worldwide.
The winery was founded in 1981 thanks to the entrepreneurial flair of Gianni Masciarelli, who inherited his passion for wine growing from his grandfather Umberto and put it to good use during his youthful experiences in Champagne and Burgundy. Back in Italy, he began introducing the methods learned in France in the vineyard and cellar, revolutionising the Abruzzo viticulture at the time and focusing on craftsmanship and excellence. Continuous research and experimentation while respecting the vine and the relationship with the territory have enabled Trebbiano and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo to rightfully enter the elite of world oenology, remaining the pillars of Masciarelli for 40 years.
Masciarelli’s dream has always been to enhance the native Abruzzo vines and, at the same time, promote Abruzzo as one of the great lands of Italian wine. Therefore, Masciarelli works not only with native grape varieties – whose international character is enhanced but in close symbiosis with their territory of origin – but also with great international ones such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which, each positioned in the proper biological niche, have proved to be original and unprecedented readings of regional viticulture.
The heart of Masciarelli remains San Martino sulla Marrucina, a small medieval village at 450 meters above sea level in the province of Chieti, but the company has its own vineyards and olive groves scattered in the four Abruzzo provinces, for an estate of over 60 vineyards.
Against the backdrop of a highly green landscape, sometimes harsh and wild but rich in biodiversity, which in a few kilometres winds from the Apennines to the Adriatic through numerous micro-climatic areas, lays the ecosystem of the Masciarelli plots, carefully selected over the decades for their pedoclimatic characteristics, able to enhance the character of each vine produced, native or international.
Hospitality excellence is the trademark of the Masciarelli family. Between the Castello di Semivicoli, the beating heart of the Masciarelli house, and the Cascina di Chiara, a modern reinterpretation of a classic residence among the vineyards, the experiences that can be enjoyed in the Masciarelli places are an exclusive mix of art, history, taste and hospitality equipped with all comforts.
